8 considerations when designing CMS driven websites
We get asked quite regularly what to consider when designing a CMS driven website, so that transition of design into fully functioning website is smooth. So I thought I'd write a quick blog!
1. Background images
Ensure any background images ie buttons, site backgrounds, etc are expandable to allow for any amount of content.
2. Amount of graphics
Image heavy sites may effect load time of the site which can be frustrating for users.
3. Consistency
Follow a convention throughout the site for headings. For example, the different sizes of headings should ideally be consistent. Most clients don't understand how to code so giving them a small set of predefined styles makes life much easier for them.
4. Design for all eventualities
Take into consideration how content could impact your design. For example, a client could add a long news title when the design only allows for a small title.
5. User login sites
Ensure you include a login/logout button. These should be in a conventional place on the site (top right for example), easy to find and on every page.
6. Sensible page structure
Clients may not want a mobile version now but always design with mobile in mind as this may be something they wish to add in the future.
7. Sensible navigation
Keep navigation practical. Navigation that it heavily image based becomes difficult to manage via CMS without intervention from a designer or use of Photoshop.
8. Keep it simple
Design with the client in mind. For example, images with rounded corners may need to be prepared prior to being uploaded in the CMS so will require knowledge of photoshop or similar, something that not all clients will have.
I am sure there are more that could be added here. If you think of any, feel free to add them in the comments!
