James Chapman
DDR Director James Chapman leads the technical team.
He knows the right questions to ask to make your web ideas work. Here are a few of his answers too.
What did you do before DDR?
I worked for an agency based in Somerset as Head of Development. I’ve worked with a lot of agencies both as a permanent employee, and as a freelancer, as well as with DDR which really helps me appreciate the everyday issues they face.
Very first job?
Where do I start? In my teens I was anything from paperboy to shelf stacker and checkout chick at the local supermarket. Ah, those were the days!
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Seeing a website go live and do well. There’s nothing better seeing a new e-commerce site taking orders and making money for the owner.
How can clients get the best out of working with you?
When a website goes live, that’s when the work begins. A website should never become stale so we like to constantly work with clients to review and make changes as part of an ongoing partnership.
Where’s your favourite place in the world?
Portland Bill in Dorset. Such a tranquil place to be, where I can sit, breathe in the fresh sea air and reflect on life. How deep is that, eh!
What superpower would you like to have?
Most definitely the ability to read minds. It would definitely make life a lot easier sometimes!
Best thing a client has ever said to you?
That’s a toughie but think it was this. “You’re a breath of fresh air. Always willing to have a chat, so much better than any developer we’ve ever had.”
Proudest achievement?
Going self employed after my doubters said I wouldn’t make it. They know who they are!
What makes you laugh?
Got to be this video (contains some bad language- don’t click if you’re under 18 or easily offended!)
What makes a great web developer?
The obvious answer would be a good coder, however I believe there’s more to it than that. Developers need to have at least an awareness of other aspects including usability, information architecture, SEO, as well as always being proactive and positive with clients. Far too many “nay sayers” out there for my liking!
